Abstract
Objectives: The purposes of this study were to investigate the oral health status of the disabled in Korea, and to analyze the oral health related factors which can explain the relationship between oral health status and disabled type, severity of handicap, and oral health behaviors.

Methods: A total of 1,307 subjects aged h n6~ to 7 5 who attending the special schools and welfare center were finally selected by stratified cluster sampling. The subjects were examined their oral condition by 13 trained dentists, and also surveyed their socio-demographic characteristics and oral health behaviors by face to face interview. For crude and adjusted associations, bivariate and multivariate analysis were performed using SPSS program (SPSS 12.0KO for Windows, SPSS Inc, Chicago, USA).

Results: The DMFT index and prevalence of periodontitis of shtdy subjects were 5.44 and 26.5%, respectively. These indices were summarized in stratified age group as follows: DMFT index were 1.79 (ages 6-11), 3.60 (ages 12-14), 6.19 (ages 15-24), 7.37 (ages 25-34), and 9.49 (ages235), and prevalence of periodontitis were 3.2% (ages 12-14), 17.8% (ages 15-24), 30.0% (ages 25-34) and 63.2% (ages235), respectively. The DMFT index of disabled people was more strongly related to gender, age, disabled type, frequency of toothbrushing, dependency of toothbrushing and dental visit, and variables which were significantly associated with prevalence of periodontitis were age, disabled type and
dependency of toothbrushing. Moreover, age and disabled type were more significant predictor of oral disease among disabled people in Korea.

Conclusions: Individualized preventive dental care for each age group and disabled type could be reduce the severity and progression of dental caries and periodontal disease among disabled people in Korea.
